Nation-building for the new state of BiH was largely decided on or imposed by internationals, and there was little or no incentive for the population to develop feelings of nationhood vis-à-vis the state of BiH. This was compounded by a lack of national leadership, and the strength and following of nationalist politicians, many of whom had been active during the war and focused only on their own respective groups rather than on the well-being of the state as a whole.
